R v Warrington

2022 Bristol
Warrington was charged with the murder of his mother and his father. Dr Sandford, instructed by the prosecution, concluded that the defendant was psychiatrically unwell at the time of the killing and supported the defence of diminished responsibility. The prosecution accepted a plea to diminished responsibility.

R v White

2022 Bristol
White was charged with the murder of her partner. Appointed by the prosecution, Dr Sandford argued that the medical evidence did not support the partial defence of diminished responsibility. White was found guilty of murder Bristol Crown Court.

R v Reeves

2022 Bristol
Reeves was charged with the murder of his next door neighbours following arguments over car parking. Dr Sandford, appointed by the prosecution, argued that his mild symptoms were not of a nature or severity that warranted a diminished responsibility defence. Reeves was found guilty of the murder of both neighbours.   

R v Arslan

2022 Bristol

Arslan was charged with the murder of his neighbour and the attempted murder of a second neighbour. Dr Sandford, instructed by the prosecution, argued that the defence of diminished responsibility was not supported because of the absence of serious mental illness. Arslan was found guilty of murder at Bristol Crown Court.

R v Schreiber

2021 Winchester

Schreiber was accused of the murder of his millionaire stepfather and the attempted murder of his mother. Dr Sandford, appointed by the prosecution, argued that his mental illness was not of a nature or severity that warranted a diminished responsibility defence. Schreiber was found guilty of murder at Winchester Crown Court.

R v Keresi

2021 Winchester

Keresi was charged with the murder of her new-born child. Dr Sandford, appointed by the prosecution, provided a report assisting the jury and outlining the issues with regard to the defence of infanticide. Keresi was found guilty of murder at Winchester Crown Court.


R v Richardson

2021 Bristol

Richardson was charged with the attempted murder of both of his parents. Dr Sandford, appointed by the prosecution, argued that there was no link between the defendant's severe mental illness and these offences. Richardson received a custodial sentence at Bristol Crown Court.

R v Ourzat

2021 Winchester

Ourzat was accused of the murder of his ex-partner. Dr Sandford, appointed by the prosecution, argued that the medical evidence did not support the partial defence of diminished responsibility. Ourzat was found guilty of murder Winchester Crown Court.

R v Zdun

2020 Winchester

Zdun was charged with the murder of his wife and daughter. 

Dr Sandford was instructed by the defence and gave evidence that he was deluded at the time of the killings.

R v Palmas

2020 Exeter

Palmas was accused of killing a woman at a farm where he worked. 

Dr Sandford, appointed by the prosecution, concluded that the defendant was psychiatrically unwell at the time of the killing and supported the defence of diminished responsibility. The prosecution accepted a plea to diminished responsibility.

R v Lewis-Ranwell

2019 Exeter

Lewis-Randell was charged with triple homicide of three elderly men in Exeter. 

Dr Sandford, instructed by the defence, put forward the case that Mr Lewis-Ranwell was psychotic at the time and legally insane. 

He was found not guilty of murder on the grounds of insanity.

R v Beviss

2018 Exeter

Beviss was charged with the murder of a man in an unprovoked attack outside a Jehovah’s Witness hall. Dr Sandford, instructed by the defence, found that Beviss was deluded at the time and supported the partial defence of diminished responsibility. The prosecution accepted the plea of diminished responsibility.

R v Barry

2017 Bristol

Barry was charged with the murder of a man who lived at his hostel. He had been discharged from a psychiatric hospital that day. Dr Sandford, for the prosecution, put forward the argument that the killing was unrelated to his mental illness. Barry was found guilty of murder.






R v Fairhurst

2016 Exeter

Fairhurst was charged with the murder of his 83 year old partner. 

Dr Sandford, appointed by the prosecution, argued that the defendant was not deluded. Fairhurst was found guilty of murder at Exeter Crown Court.






R v Conroy

2015 Bristol

Conroy was charged with the murder of a female resident in his hostel. Dr Sandford, appointed by the prosecution, found that Conroy suffered from an autistic spectrum disorder but did not meet the  criteria for the diminished responsibility defence. The defence appointed three psychiatrists who challenged Dr Sandford’s view. The jury found Conroy guilty of murder. The case subsequently went to the Court of Appeal where the conviction was upheld.
