Dr Sandford has compiled over 950 reports, including over 230 in homicide cases. He has given evidence in numerous homicide cases for both the defence and prosecution.

Dr Sandford qualified as a doctor in 1990. He gained membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1996. He started compiling medical reports in 1997. In 2001 he was appointed to his first Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist post. In 2010 he was elected to Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Since 2015 Dr Sandford has worked as a NHS Consultant Forensic and General Adult Psychiatrist for his local NHS Trust.


Sandford Medical provides a specialist forensic and general adult psychiatry Medico Legal service.

Instructions in criminal cases are accepted from the prosecution, defence and from the Court. In civil and family cases, instructions are accepted from the representatives of the respondent or claimant.

Psychiatric assessments are carried out for issues including:

  • Fitness to plead
  • Mental state (at the time of the offence and/or current time)
  • Defence or partial defence of diminished responsibility
  • Insanity defence
  • Disposal
  • Fitness to parent
  • Diagnosis, treatment and prognosis
